Serein Hotel
Porto, Portugal
Hospitality

Twelve rooms and three common spaces within a 1920s merchant house on the edge of the Cedofeita district, restored with warm plaster, dark oak, and hand-laid Portuguese tile. Serein operates as a small independent hotel and cultural programme space.
Client context
A hotel developer and a ceramicist formed a partnership to create an alternative to the anonymous boutique hotels multiplying across Porto. They wanted each room to feel like a considered apartment, not a product — an experience shaped by material quality and small acts of hospitality rather than amenities.
The challenge
The building had been partially converted to apartments in the 1980s, with suspended ceilings and partitions concealing the original structure. Revealing and restoring the fabric required a methodical approach to demolition, with decisions made in sequence as each layer was uncovered.
The concept
Each of the twelve rooms has its own palette, artwork, and arrangement. They share a material family — plaster, oak, terracotta, linen — but are individually calibrated to their aspect and floor. Common spaces are minimal: a breakfast room, a library alcove, and a small courtyard.
Materials
Hand-Trowelled Plaster — Warm white plaster with subtle variation throughout all rooms.
Dark Stained Oak — Bespoke joinery, bed frames, and window surrounds in stained oak.
Azulejo Tile — Original 1920s tiles restored and supplemented with new Portuguese production.
Natural Linen — All soft furnishings in undyed or naturally dyed linen.
“Every morning I wake up in a different light. The room changes — or perhaps I do. Either way, the staying feels like an education.”
