Six over-water villas on a private atoll in the North Malé region, each constructed with handwoven thatch roofs and locally sourced coral stone. The retreat operates at deliberately slow occupancy, hosting a maximum of twelve guests at any one time.

Client context

The operator — a small luxury travel company with a portfolio of environmentally committed properties — wanted to create a resort that demonstrated that restraint is the highest form of luxury. No spa building, no fitness centre, no swim-up bar: just six villas, a kitchen, and the ocean.

The challenge

Construction logistics on a remote atoll with no fresh water supply and limited local contractor capacity required an intensive prefabrication strategy. All timber elements were pre-cut on the mainland and assembled on-site. Coral stone was sourced only from legal suppliers using controlled extraction methods.

The concept

Each villa is oriented for the prevailing wind and the morning sun, with sleeping and bathing positioned to receive the best of each. Roofs are steeply pitched to allow air movement; floors are at water level so that the ocean is a constant sensory presence. Everything unnecessary has been removed.

Materials

Coral Stone — Locally sourced and legally extracted coral stone for villa platforms and walls.
Handwoven Thatch — Traditional cadjan weave roofing, maintained annually by local craftspeople.
Reclaimed Teak — Reclaimed teak for decks, furniture, and interior joinery.
Terrazzo — Custom terrazzo using coral fragments and local aggregate for bathroom floors.

“We came for a week and spent most of it on the deck doing nothing at all. I have never left anywhere feeling so completely restored.”
